Burlington, Vt. – Vermont residents are enduring one final day of oppressive heat, with temperatures and humidity pushing heat index values into the mid-80s to mid-90s by this afternoon. The Champlain Valley will bear the brunt, prompting a Heat Advisory that remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the combination of high humidity and warm temperatures will create dangerous conditions for those spending extended time outdoors. Officials urge limiting strenuous activities during peak heat hours, wearing light clothing, and taking frequent shaded breaks.

Communities including Burlington, Middlebury, and St. Albans are expected to see the highest heat index readings, with urban areas experiencing reduced overnight cooling. Outdoor workers, the elderly, and young children face the greatest risk, and pet owners are reminded not to leave animals in vehicles or direct sun.

While temperatures are expected to ease Thursday, scattered showers and thunderstorms could bring relief this evening. More typical summer conditions return later this week.
