Burlington, Vt. – Northern Vermont is bracing for dangerous heat through Wednesday morning as a Heat Advisory takes hold from 8 a.m. Tuesday until 8 a.m. Wednesday. Heat index values are expected to climb into the mid to upper 90s, posing a serious risk for heat-related illnesses.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the advisory covers portions of the St. Lawrence Valley and northern Champlain Valley, including Burlington, Middlebury, and surrounding communities. The combination of high humidity and soaring temperatures will make it feel oppressive, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces, and drink plenty of fluids. Vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, and those without cooling access face the highest risk. Nighttime relief will be minimal, with lows only dipping near 70 degrees, allowing heat stress to accumulate.
Travelers and outdoor workers should plan schedules around the hottest part of the day, typically between 1 and 5 p.m. Cooling centers may open in some towns if conditions worsen.
The heat threat will ease Wednesday as temperatures trend downward, but more advisories could be issued later this week if high humidity returns.
