BURLINGTON, Vt. – Residents across northern Vermont should cover sensitive plants tonight as frost grips the region before a warm-up Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, a Frost Advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday for Addison, Chittenden, Windsor, Rutland, and nearby counties, with overnight lows dropping into the mid-30s. Drivers along Route 7 may also encounter patchy frost during the early morning commute.

Gardeners and homeowners should take immediate steps to protect outdoor vegetation, as uncovered plants risk being killed by Sunday morning. Farmers in rural Addison and Windsor counties could also see damage to late-season crops.

Saturday night stays mostly clear with calm winds, allowing temperatures to dip near 39 degrees in Burlington. The chill lifts quickly, however, as highs rebound into the low 70s by Sunday afternoon. Monday continues the warm spell with mostly sunny skies and highs near 75.

By Monday night, a shift in the pattern brings a 30 percent chance of showers. Rain chances increase Tuesday, particularly in western Vermont, as moisture spreads into the region. The unsettled stretch lasts into midweek, with periods of clouds and scattered rain before skies clear late Thursday.

Residents should plan for a chilly start Sunday, a mild warm-up through early week, and possible wet roads by Tuesday’s commute.

Warnings remain in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday, with additional advisories possible if temperatures dip again later in the week.
