Burlington, Iowa – Residents across eastern Iowa woke up to an unusually chilly Sunday morning as Burlington tied a long-standing temperature record. The city dipped to 42 degrees, matching the mark set in 1956 for September 7.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, the crisp conditions spread across much of the region, making for one of the coldest early September mornings in recent memory. The agency confirmed Burlington’s reading as an official tie with its 1956 record.
Elsewhere across southeast Iowa and western Illinois, temperatures also fell into the low-to-mid 40s. Communities along the Mississippi River including Fort Madison and Keokuk reported similarly cool conditions, with some rural spots dipping even lower.
The cooler air is expected to shift eastward by Monday, giving way to a gradual warm-up across Iowa. Still, residents are advised to be prepared for chilly starts during the next couple of mornings. Those heading out early should keep jackets handy and consider protecting late-season gardens from the cold.
Temperatures are forecast to rebound into the mid-to-upper 70s by midweek, offering a return to more seasonable September weather.
