Buffalo, NY – A complex weather system is set to bring a messy mix of rain, sleet, and snow to western New York this weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo.

Spotty rain showers will develop across the Southern Tier this afternoon before expanding overnight. Most areas will see rain through early Sunday, but colder air arriving later in the day will cause precipitation to change to a wintry mix and then snow by Sunday night.

Forecasters say sleet and freezing rain may develop late tonight into Sunday morning, especially east of Lake Erie and along the Niagara Frontier. The transition to snow could occur as early as Sunday afternoon, with a few inches of accumulation possible by nightfall—particularly across higher elevations south of Buffalo.

“Any snow during the day will struggle to stick to area roadways,” the NWS noted, but conditions are expected to worsen by evening as temperatures drop.

Drivers should prepare for slick spots and changing road conditions, particularly on untreated surfaces and rural routes.

The NWS added that the system will move out late Sunday night, followed by blustery winds and lingering snow showers into Monday.
