Buffalo, NY – Scorching heat and stifling humidity will grip Western New York on Thursday, sending heat index values soaring well into the 90s across Buffalo, Rochester, and surrounding areas. A Heat Advisory is in effect for much of the region, with residents urged to take precautions as the risk of heat-related illness spikes.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the advisory lasts from Thursday morning through 6 p.m., covering Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, and Monroe counties, among others. High temperatures combined with oppressive humidity will create dangerous conditions, especially for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those without air conditioning.

Local agencies recommend seeking air-conditioned spaces, avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, wearing lightweight clothing, and checking on neighbors. Hydration is critical—drink plenty of water, and be alert for symptoms of heat exhaustion or cramps. Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a few minutes.

Major highways including I-90 and I-190 may see increased incidents of heat-related vehicle trouble. The sweltering conditions could also prompt changes to outdoor events and cause power demand to spike as residents seek relief.

The advisory is expected to remain in place until Thursday evening, with a chance for further alerts if the heat lingers. Stay tuned to the latest NWS updates and take action to stay safe during this intense summer surge.
