Buffalo, New York – Winter weather is returning quickly to western New York today, bringing widespread snow, worsening travel conditions, and bitter cold that will intensify into Thursday night across the Buffalo region.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, rain and mixed precipitation will transition to snow by evening across western and north-central New York. Snow will become steadier overnight, with lake effect snow developing east of both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario by Thursday morning. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of the region through Thursday night.
Snowfall totals of 5 to 10 inches are expected in higher elevations east of Lake Erie and east of Lake Ontario. Lower elevations, including the Buffalo metro area, can expect widespread accumulations of 3 to 6 inches. While snowfall rates may vary, periods of reduced visibility and snow-covered roads are likely, especially during the Thursday morning and evening commutes.
As colder air pours in, lake effect snow showers are expected to persist through Thursday night and into early Friday. Gusty winds will add to the impact, producing blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility in open areas and along major corridors such as the New York State Thruway and Route 219.
Temperatures will continue to fall, with wind chills expected to drop near or below zero on Thursday and Thursday night. The combination of snow and cold will make conditions dangerous for anyone outdoors for extended periods.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions. Residents should dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and ensure pets and vulnerable neighbors are protected from the cold.
Winter weather advisories remain in effect, and additional alerts may be issued if lake effect snow bands become more intense or persistent through Thursday night.
