Buffalo, NY – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie Counties from Wednesday evening through Friday evening, as heavy lake effect snow threatens to disrupt Thanksgiving week travel across Western New York.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, snowfall totals could exceed 7 inches in the most persistent snow bands, with wind gusts up to 45 mph creating blowing and drifting snow and whiteout conditions. Forecasters caution that travel may become treacherous and potentially life-threatening, especially across open areas and higher terrain.
The timing of the storm coincides with one of the busiest travel periods of the year. The NWS warns that the hazardous conditions could lead to slippery roads, downed tree branches, and isolated power outages, particularly in the Southtowns and lake-effect zones south of Buffalo.
“Whiteout conditions are possible and may make travel treacherous,” the NWS stated, urging residents to monitor updated forecasts and consider adjusting travel plans.
Drivers are advised to keep emergency kits in their vehicles and avoid non-essential travel if conditions worsen late week.
