Buffalo, N.Y. – Snow will begin covering roads across western New York by 7 p.m. tonight, setting up slick travel for the Wednesday morning commute from the Southern Tier to the Buffalo Southtowns.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 1 p.m. Wednesday for Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and southern Erie counties. Widespread totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with higher amounts across elevated terrain. Roads from Jamestown to Olean and along U.S. Route 219 near Springville could turn snow-covered overnight, with reduced visibility during steadier bursts.
Farther north and east, a separate advisory runs from 1 a.m. Wednesday until 7 a.m. Thursday for Oswego and Lewis counties. Snow will arrive overnight, then transition to more focused lake effect bands Wednesday night. The Tug Hill Plateau and parts of Oswego County could see 5 to 9 inches in several waves, creating hazardous conditions along Interstate 81 and Route 104.
Drivers should allow extra time, keep headlights on in falling snow and check 511NY for road conditions. Snow tapers in western counties by early Wednesday afternoon, but lake effect bands may persist east of Lake Ontario into early Thursday. Additional updates are possible if bands intensify.
