Buffalo, NY – Drivers across the Buffalo metro area and surrounding western New York counties should prepare for slippery travel conditions Monday as lake effect snow moves back into the region, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

According to the National Weather Service, lake effect snow is expected to develop late Monday morning and continue through early Tuesday, with total snowfall accumulations of 2 to 5 inches in the most persistent snow bands. The advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Monday until 7 a.m. EST Tuesday.

The advisory covers Northern Erie County, including Buffalo, as well as Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, and Southern Erie counties. The greatest accumulations are expected across the Buffalo metro area, southern Niagara County, southwest Orleans County, western Genesee County, and ridge tops in western Wyoming County.

Forecasters say snowfall will occur in relatively narrow lake effect bands, meaning snowfall totals could vary significantly over short distances. Periods of reduced visibility and snow-covered roads are expected, particularly during the Monday evening commute.

In Southern Erie County, a previously issued Lake Effect Snow Warning has been cancelled and replaced with a Winter Weather Advisory, reflecting lower but still impactful snowfall totals.

Farther east, Wayne County, including Newark, remains under a separate Winter Weather Advisory through 1 p.m. Monday, where an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow is possible, mainly in the northeastern portion of the county.

Officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra travel time, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. Snowfall reports can be submitted directly to the National Weather Service through their website or social media channels.
