Buffalo, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for parts of western New York, where forecasters expect heavy snow, strong winds, and whiteout conditions heading into the Thanksgiving holiday. The warning is in effect from 1 a.m. Thursday through 1 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Meteorologists predict 12 to 20 inches of snow in the most persistent lake effect bands, with gusts up to 50 mph likely to cause blowing and drifting snow across the region. Travel could become very difficult to impossible, especially in Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and southern Erie counties, including Jamestown, Orchard Park, Olean, and Springville.

The combination of deep snow cover and strong winds may lead to downed tree limbs and isolated power outages. The heaviest snow is expected Thursday morning through Thursday night, coinciding with one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The National Weather Service urges residents to avoid unnecessary travel and be prepared for rapidly changing road and visibility conditions. Drivers should keep emergency kits with blankets, flashlights, food, and water in case of delays or road closures.

Forecasters note that snow intensity can vary sharply over short distances, with heavy bands producing whiteouts just miles from clear skies. Residents across western New York are advised to monitor local alerts closely as the storm develops.
