Buffalo, N.Y. – A stretch of dry summer weather will give way to rain and thunderstorms by Tuesday night across western New York, raising concerns for commuters and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a slight chance of showers develops Tuesday afternoon, but the main threat arrives overnight with a 50% chance of thunderstorms. The heaviest rain is expected late Tuesday into early Wednesday, with rainfall totals ranging from a tenth of an inch to locally higher amounts in storms.

Travelers on I-90 and Route 33 should be prepared for slick conditions and reduced visibility during the Wednesday morning drive. South winds up to 6 mph will accompany the system, with conditions improving gradually by late Wednesday night.

Thursday looks mostly sunny with highs in the upper 70s, providing a window of calmer weather before another slight chance of showers returns Saturday.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary driving during the heaviest downpours and to secure outdoor items that could be impacted by gusty winds around thunderstorms.

Showers and storm risks will taper Wednesday night, with sunshine expected to return Thursday and Friday.
