Buffalo, NY – After a mainly dry start to the weekend, steady rounds of rainfall are on the way for western New York beginning Sunday afternoon and continuing through much of next week, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Forecasters said a few light showers may occur over the weekend, but the bulk of the precipitation will arrive late Sunday and persist through Friday, October 24. The system is expected to bring “beneficial rainfall” to an area that remains under moderate drought conditions, as shown in the latest U.S. Drought Monitor update from October 14.

According to the Weather Prediction Center’s seven-day outlook, parts of western and upstate New York could receive over an inch of rain, with the heaviest totals likely across the Finger Lakes and northwestern Pennsylvania. The rainfall is anticipated to gradually improve soil moisture and streamflow levels that have remained below average in recent months.

In addition to the rain, forecasters noted that periods of breezy to windy weather are possible midweek as the active pattern develops. Temperatures will remain seasonable, with highs mainly in the 50s to near 60°F.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts for updates as the rainfall event unfolds.
