Western New York – Residents of Buffalo and surrounding areas in Western New York are advised to prepare for cooler temperatures and potential lake hazards this weekend. The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a Beach Hazards Statement effective through Saturday afternoon, warning of strong rip currents and dangerous swim conditions on Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
According to the weather service, patchy fog is expected this morning, with cooler and drier conditions prevailing throughout the day. Highs will range from the upper 60s to mid-70s, creating a pleasant, if slightly brisk, summer day. However, the cooler air and clear skies may encourage some to head to the lakes, where the waters are less welcoming.
The National Weather Service has also issued Small Craft Advisories, effective through Sunday, with water temperatures between 74 and 77 degrees, and wave heights reaching 4 to 7 feet. Boaters and swimmers alike are urged to exercise caution, staying clear of piers and break walls, and paying close attention to updated forecasts.
The extended forecast shows a chance of lake effect rain showers developing downwind of the lakes tonight, with conditions improving as the weekend progresses.
