Buffalo, NY – Drivers across Western New York should remain alert tonight as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday, bringing localized lake effect snow and slippery travel conditions along major roadways including Interstate 90, Interstate 190, and Route 33.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, narrow bands of lake effect snow will continue this evening across Niagara, Orleans, northern Erie, Genesee, and Wyoming counties. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected in areas where lake snow bands persist the longest.

Forecasters warn that wind gusts up to 30 mph may lead to blowing and drifting snow, causing brief but significant reductions in visibility, especially on open stretches of I-90 and I-190 near the Niagara Frontier and Buffalo metro area. These rapidly changing conditions can make travel hazardous with little warning.

While snowfall amounts will remain relatively modest overall, the localized nature of lake effect snow means some areas could see slick roads while nearby locations remain mostly dry. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are particularly vulnerable to icy conditions during the overnight hours.

The advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday, after which snow bands are expected to weaken and gradually shift south. Even after snowfall tapers, lingering slick spots may persist into the early morning hours.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for sudden visibility changes if traveling tonight. Motorists are encouraged to check updated road conditions before heading out and use extra caution when encountering active lake effect snow bands.
