Buffalo, NY – Drivers across western New York are facing near-zero visibility this afternoon as a powerful band of lake effect snow pushes across the New York State Thruway, with intense whiteout conditions from Dunkirk to the Boston Hills. Winds gusting to 40 mph are blowing snow across lanes, especially near Silver Creek and Dunkirk, making driving extremely hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the heaviest snow is falling south of the metro area but is expected to gradually lift north toward the city later this afternoon. While the band may weaken as it reaches Buffalo, poor visibility and blowing snow will continue to pose a threat through early evening.
Traffic cameras show treacherous conditions on I-90 near exits 58 and 59, where plows are struggling to keep up. Travel delays and minor accidents have already been reported, and state officials are urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
Blowing snow is expected to persist into the evening, especially in open areas south and east of Buffalo. Another update may be issued if the snow band intensifies again tonight.
