Buffalo, New York – Wind gusts up to 40 mph will intensify across western New York overnight, creating hazardous crosswinds on I-90 and I-190 through 6 a.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, south to southwest winds will strengthen late Friday evening, with peak gusts near 40 mph across far western New York and the North Country. Elsewhere, gusts will range from 25 to 30 mph. The strongest winds are expected between midnight and daybreak Saturday.
Drivers along I-90 from Buffalo to Batavia and Rochester may encounter sudden crosswinds, especially on elevated stretches and open areas near Lake Erie. The Skyway and I-190 bridges could see the most significant gusts, posing challenges for high-profile vehicles. Farther east, along I-81 toward Watertown and the Tug Hill Plateau, winds may approach 40 mph before sunrise.
Temperatures will remain mild overnight, with lows settling into the mid-30s for most communities, limiting icing concerns. A few scattered rain showers could develop toward Saturday morning, but widespread precipitation is not expected before daybreak.
Motorists should keep both hands on the wheel, reduce speed on exposed roadways and allow extra space when passing tractor-trailers. Secure loose outdoor items and prepare for isolated power flickers where gusts peak.
Winds will gradually ease after sunrise Saturday, though breezy conditions may linger into the afternoon. Additional statements could be issued if gusts exceed projected speeds overnight.
