Buffalo, New York – Up to 3 inches of snowfall Thursday morning is slowing travel along I-90 and surrounding roadways.
According to the US National Weather Service in Buffalo, seasonably cold west to northwest winds will continue to support lake-enhanced and upslope snowfall through the day and into tonight. Snowfall intensity is expected to be greatest early Thursday morning, followed by a gradual decrease through the afternoon.
Forecast maps show widespread totals of 1 to 3 inches across much of western and north-central New York through 1 a.m. Friday. Heavier pockets are possible east of Lake Ontario and across higher terrain, while metro Buffalo, Rochester and surrounding suburbs are expected to see lighter but steady accumulations.
Periods of accumulating light to moderate snow may result in minor travel disruptions, especially during the morning commute. Roadways including I-90 in Erie and Genesee counties, I-190 near downtown Buffalo, I-490 in Rochester and I-81 toward Watertown may experience reduced visibility and slushy conditions early in the day.
The National Weather Service said snowfall rates will trend downward through the afternoon. Increasing February sun angle may help improve road conditions later in the day, though lingering snow showers could persist into Thursday night before tapering off.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and maintain safe following distances. Students, commuters and early-shift workers may encounter slick stretches during the morning hours.
