A significant winter storm is bringing heavy lake-effect snow to Western New York, prompting warnings for several counties, including Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming, and Southern Erie.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, the Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect through 4 a.m. Saturday for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, where snowfall totals are expected to reach between 14 and 22 inches in the most persistent bands. Winds gusting up to 50 mph are likely to create dangerous blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility.

For Wyoming and Southern Erie counties, the warning will expire earlier, at 4 a.m. Friday. Total accumulations of 8 to 14 inches are anticipated, primarily in higher elevations like the Boston and Wyoming Hills. Similarly, gusty winds may cause scattered power outages and hazardous travel conditions.

The storm is expected to make commutes on Thursday morning and evening particularly challenging, with rapidly changing road conditions. The NWS advises motorists to prepare for delays and remain vigilant as conditions may vary drastically within short distances.

Residents are encouraged to report snow conditions via the NWS website or social media and to stay updated on changing forecasts.
