Buffalo, NY – Residents across western New York should prepare for the possibility of severe thunderstorms Monday afternoon into the evening, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo.

The agency reported Sunday night that storms will begin developing after 2 p.m. Monday, September 22, and may strengthen as they move east from Buffalo and Erie County into the Finger Lakes region. The storms are expected to last through 8 p.m.

According to the NWS, hazards include wind gusts over 60 miles per hour and frequent lightning. Officials cautioned that these conditions could cause power outages, tree damage, and travel disruptions. The storm outlook places western New York under a “marginal” to “slight” risk category for severe weather.

Areas most likely to be affected include Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Jamestown, Rochester, and communities throughout Erie, Niagara, and Chautauqua counties. Residents in the Finger Lakes should also stay alert as storms shift east later in the evening.

The NWS urges residents to monitor the forecast closely and have a plan of action in case severe weather strikes. “Timing of storm activity will be mid-afternoon into the evening (2–8 p.m.),” officials stated.
