Buffalo, NY – Snow arriving this afternoon is expected to slow travel and impact the evening commute across the Buffalo metro area.
According to the National Weather Service Buffalo office, a widespread snowfall will spread east across western New York this afternoon and continue through tonight. Forecasters expect 2 to 5 inches of snow across much of the Buffalo region, with higher totals east of Lake Ontario.
Snowfall rates may reach 0.5 to 1 inch per hour at times, particularly during the late afternoon and evening. Gusty winds are also expected, which could lead to blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility on area roadways.
The National Weather Service warned that metro Buffalo commuters should expect slippery road conditions and reduced visibility, especially during the evening drive. Primary and secondary roads may become snow-covered quickly during heavier bursts.
Lake-effect snow northeast of Lake Ontario is expected to weaken this morning, though additional accumulation of 2 to 4 inches remains possible in northern Jefferson County. Across western New York, the primary concern will be widespread snow rather than localized lake bands.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and use caution at intersections and on untreated roads. Evening workers, students, and commuters may experience delays as conditions deteriorate after mid-afternoon.
Snow is expected to taper later tonight, though untreated surfaces may remain slick into Thursday morning.
