Buffalo, NY –Lake-effect snow will continue tonight across areas southeast of Lake Ontario and, to a lesser degree, off Lake Erie, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Buffalo. Snow showers are expected to persist through the night, with the most significant accumulations projected for counties east of the lake. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties until 10 a.m. Tuesday.
According to NWS Buffalo, the highest snowfall totals—ranging from 3 to 6 inches—are expected across eastern Wayne and northern Cayuga counties, where snow bands are forecast to remain more persistent. Additional accumulations of 1 to 1.5 inches are possible across the higher terrain of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, though snowfall intensity there is expected to be lighter.
Forecasters note that conditions will remain cold tonight, with temperatures dropping into the 20s and low 30s. Winds will be less breezy compared to earlier in the day, but cold air and lingering lake moisture will continue to fuel snow showers in the advisory area.
Travelers should be prepared for reduced visibility and snow-covered roads in the heaviest bands—particularly in communities such as Wolcott, Fair Haven, Red Creek, Weedsport, and Cato, where accumulation forecasts show totals of 2 to 6 inches depending on band placement.
Lake-effect snow is expected to gradually diminish by early Tuesday as winds shift and the colder air begins to moderate. However, NWS Buffalo advises residents to monitor conditions overnight, as localized snow bands may shift or intensify with subtle wind changes.
Drivers heading out early Tuesday should allow extra travel time, especially in Wayne and Cayuga counties where advisory-level conditions may linger through the morning commute.
