Buffalo, New York – Widespread light snow is expected to spread across Buffalo and western New York tonight through Tuesday, with changing precipitation types leading to minor travel impacts.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, snow will develop overnight and continue through Tuesday, gradually tapering from west to east as warmer air moves in. In Buffalo and lower elevations, snow may change to rain Tuesday, while colder areas farther east remain snowier for a longer period.
Forecast snowfall totals across much of western New York range from 1 to 3 inches, with localized higher amounts east of Lake Ontario where snow is expected to continue into Tuesday night. Portions of the Eastern Lake Ontario region may see several additional inches as lake-enhanced snow persists.
NWS probability maps also highlight a risk of freezing rain or freezing drizzle, particularly across parts of western New York Tuesday night. Some areas show a 20 to 40 percent chance of at least 0.01 inches of ice, which could lead to slick spots, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks.
While no major winter storm is expected, the combination of snow, rain, and possible ice could create changing road conditions through the day Tuesday and into the evening.
The timing may affect commuters, students, and holiday travelers, particularly during the Tuesday morning and evening travel periods.
Drivers are encouraged to monitor road conditions, reduce speeds during mixed precipitation, and allow extra travel time as weather conditions evolve.
