Buffalo, New York – Light snow is expected to return to western New York beginning this evening and continuing at times through Saturday, with minor accumulations for most areas but higher totals possible in elevated terrain, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

Forecasters said light snow will develop Friday evening as a warm front moves across the region. Additional light snow is possible Saturday as a pair of cold fronts track through western and north-central New York. Snowfall is expected to be intermittent rather than continuous.

Most locations, including the Buffalo metro area, can expect a coating to around 1 inch of snow through Saturday. However, higher terrain of the Southern Tier and areas east of Lake Ontario could see localized totals up to 4 inches, where colder temperatures and upslope flow enhance snowfall.

The National Weather Service indicated that while widespread travel disruptions are not expected, slick spots may develop on untreated roads, particularly overnight and during early morning hours. Temperatures near freezing will allow snow to accumulate on colder surfaces.

No winter weather advisories were in effect at the time of the update, but officials cautioned that conditions may change if snowfall becomes more persistent in higher elevations.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, especially during evening and early morning travel periods, and to monitor forecast updates through Saturday.
