Buffalo, NY – Lake effect snow continues across western and north-central New York today, with bands expected to shift southeast of Lake Ontario tonight, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo. Snow showers will remain active through the day before focusing on eastern Wayne and northern Cayuga counties late tonight into early Tuesday.
According to the NWS, snowfall totals will generally remain on the lighter side today, but periodic bursts of lake effect snow may still reduce visibility and lead to slick travel—especially in areas that catch the more persistent bands. Communities southeast of both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario will experience the greatest impacts as winds direct snow into higher terrain and lake-adjacent counties.
Forecasters say high temperatures today will stay cold, only reaching the low to upper 30s. Overnight lows are expected to drop into the low to upper 20s, increasing the risk for icy patches on untreated roads and elevated surfaces. Motorists traveling tonight should use caution, particularly in rural stretches of Wayne and Cayuga counties where snowfall rates could increase as the primary band shifts east.
The transition of lake effect snow through the region may cause conditions to change quickly across short distances. Residents could see clear skies in one location and steady snow just a few miles away as the wind flow adjusts.
Tuesday will bring a gradual reduction in lake effect activity as winds weaken and shift, though isolated flurries may linger early in the day. The cold pattern is expected to continue through midweek.
