Buffalo, NY – A powerful lake-effect snowstorm is expected to bring dangerous and potentially life-threatening travel conditions to the Buffalo area beginning Sunday afternoon and lasting through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Wednesday for northern Erie County, including the City of Buffalo. Forecasters expect 10 to 20 inches of snow, accompanied by wind gusts up to 50 mph, creating widespread blowing and drifting snow.

The heaviest impacts are expected along Interstate 90, Route 33, and the Kensington Expressway, where snowfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour Sunday night through Monday, and again Tuesday into Tuesday night. Officials warn that whiteout conditions are likely, especially during peak travel hours.

The hazardous conditions are expected to significantly impact the Monday morning through Wednesday morning commutes. Deep snow-covered roads, drifting snow, and rapidly changing visibility may make travel extremely difficult or impossible at times.

Strong winds may also down tree branches and cause isolated power outages, particularly during periods of intense snowfall. Wind chills could fall to zero to 10 degrees below zero Monday night through Tuesday night, increasing the risk for stranded motorists.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, prepare for extended disruptions, and monitor forecast updates closely as snowbands shift.
