Buffalo, New York – Travel conditions across western New York are expected to deteriorate quickly this evening as widespread rain changes over to snow, setting the stage for hazardous driving across the Buffalo metro and surrounding counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, precipitation will transition to all snow by early evening, with snow becoming more persistent overnight. Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for Erie, Niagara, and surrounding counties, while additional warnings and advisories extend east into the Finger Lakes and north toward the North Country. Snow will transition to lake effect bands Thursday and continue into Thursday night.

Road conditions are expected to worsen along I-90, I-190, Route 33, and Route 219, where snow-covered lanes and reduced visibility will impact both the evening and Thursday morning commutes. Gusty winds may lead to brief whiteout conditions, especially in open areas south of Buffalo and near the Lake Erie shoreline. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads will become slick quickly as temperatures fall.

New York State DOT crews are preparing for extended operations, but drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel overnight and Thursday when possible. Conditions may briefly improve during the day Thursday before intensifying again Thursday night.

Snow impacts are expected to continue into Friday morning in some areas. Additional warnings or travel advisories may be issued as lake effect bands shift.
