Buffalo, New York – A potentially high-impact winter storm is lining up to affect all of western and north-central New York, with widespread heavy snow expected to develop Sunday and create hazardous travel conditions that could last into Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, snow is expected to spread from south to north Sunday morning through midday, then intensify later Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. The most difficult travel conditions are expected from late Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, when snowfall rates increase and roads become snow-covered across much of the region. A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Saturday night through Monday evening.
There is a strong signal for widespread accumulating snow across Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Wyoming, Monroe, and Orleans counties, as well as inland areas east toward the Finger Lakes. Many locations have a meaningful chance of seeing seven inches or more of snow, with locally higher totals possible where lake enhancement develops, especially along the south shore of Lake Ontario.
While uncertainty remains regarding the exact storm track and snow intensity, officials warn that even small shifts could significantly affect totals and travel impacts. Major routes including I-90, I-190, I-290, and the New York State Thruway could become difficult to navigate during peak snowfall.
Residents are urged to prepare for deteriorating road conditions, consider adjusting travel plans, and ensure vehicles and emergency supplies are ready ahead of Sunday. Additional alerts and upgrades are likely as confidence continues to increase.
