Rochester, N.Y. – Dangerous heat and humidity will blanket Western and Central New York through 8 p.m. Wednesday, sending heat index values into the upper 90s for millions from Niagara Falls to Watertown.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego, Jefferson, Livingston, and Ontario counties. Cities including Rochester, Medina, Oswego, and Canandaigua should brace for the hottest conditions of the summer so far.

Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, especially for children, seniors, and those without reliable access to air conditioning. Roads and public spaces in cities like Newark and Geneseo may see fewer pedestrians as the midday heat peaks. Employers and outdoor workers are advised to schedule breaks in the shade and wear loose, light-colored clothing.

Emergency services warn the public to watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion—heavy sweating, dizziness, and nausea—and to call 911 if heat stroke is suspected. Pets and children should never be left in vehicles. Residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbors and stay hydrated.

With high temperatures likely to last through the evening, more advisories could follow. Stay tuned for updates as the heat persists.
