Rochester, N.Y. – Thunderstorms could rattle parts of New York Saturday night into Sunday, with the highest chances near the Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario regions. Drivers and outdoor planners should prepare for pop-up downpours and a few gusty storms through the second half of the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop late Saturday night between the Finger Lakes and north-central New York, with some areas like Pulaski and Watertown seeing rain chances as high as 80%. Precipitation spreads east into Sunday, lingering through the morning before scattered storms redevelop in the afternoon. Some storms could be strong, with gusty winds possible, especially east of Lake Ontario.
Cities including Rochester (57%), Geneva (62%), and Lowville (72%) are among those with elevated overnight rain chances Saturday. By Sunday, the focus shifts slightly east, with Fulton, Pulaski, and Westport nearing a 70–77% likelihood of afternoon thunderstorm activity.
Travelers should remain alert for wet road conditions and isolated ponding in low-lying areas. While widespread severe weather isn’t expected, any strong storm could produce sudden gusts and brief heavy rainfall.
Storm chances diminish by Sunday night, but more updates may follow if additional disturbances build in early next week.
