Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana is preparing for a stretch of dangerously cold air this weekend, with wind chills expected to plunge well below zero from late Saturday through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

According to forecasters, air temperatures will fall to near or below zero both Saturday night and Sunday night. When combined with 5 to 15 mph winds, wind chills are expected to reach -15° to -20° before dawn Sunday, with values nearly as low again early Monday.

Wind chill readings across the region—including Bloomington, Muncie, Terre Haute, Lafayette, Kokomo, and the Indianapolis metro—will remain below zero for long stretches of time, raising concerns for anyone spending extended periods outdoors. The NWS notes that wind chills approaching -20° can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

Sunday’s highs will not offer much relief, with most areas struggling to reach the teens. Temperatures drop again after sunset, setting up another night of hazardous cold into early Monday.

Residents are urged to take precautions, including wearing multiple layers, limiting time outdoors, and ensuring pets, vulnerable neighbors, and exposed pipes are protected. Those traveling early Sunday should be prepared for extremely cold conditions.

The bitter cold pattern is expected to ease slightly by Tuesday, but temperatures will remain below normal.
