Brooklyn, NY – Coastal communities across New York City and Long Island face dangerous conditions through Friday as pounding surf, flooding tides, and powerful rip currents spread across area beaches. Officials warn that waves up to 16 feet could batter Suffolk County, while Queens and Brooklyn may see widespread road closures during peak tides.
According to the National Weather Service, multiple Coastal Flood Warnings and Advisories are in effect from Thursday evening through early Saturday. High tide tonight could bring 2 to 2.5 feet of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas of Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk, leading to flooded basements, impassable roads, and damaged vehicles. Brooklyn’s waterfront may also experience 1 to 2 feet of flooding during evening high tides.
Travelers are urged to avoid driving through floodwaters, as several roads along Jamaica Bay, Rockaway Inlet, and the Great South Bay could be closed. Beach erosion and dune damage are also expected, particularly on the South Shore of Long Island.
Officials stress that swimmers should remain out of the surf, with life-threatening rip currents and dangerous wave action continuing through Friday night.
More advisories are likely, with conditions improving gradually over the weekend.
