Brookings, SD – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday, as light-to-moderate snow continues across portions of eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Sioux Falls. Additional snow accumulation of up to two inches is possible, particularly along the Buffalo Ridge corridor where elevation enhances snowfall.

The advisory affects Brookings County in South Dakota, along with Lincoln and Lyon counties in Minnesota. Communities including Brookings, Marshall, Tyler, Ivanhoe, Lake Benton, and Hendricks are experiencing ongoing snowfall early this morning.

According to NWS Sioux Falls, the heaviest snow will fall in higher-elevation pockets from far northeast Brookings County through Lincoln County into southwest Lyon County. While amounts are modest, even light snow can quickly make roads slick—especially untreated or rural routes. Reduced visibility in snow showers may also make travel more difficult during the busy morning hours.

Forecasters note that the impacts will be felt most during the early morning commute, as lingering snow and cold pavement combine to create dangerous driving conditions. Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve through mid-morning as snowfall tapers off and crews treat roadways. Temperatures are forecast to rise slowly after sunrise, helping reduce ice and snow buildup on main travel routes.

Residents and travelers across eastern South Dakota and adjacent portions of southwest Minnesota are encouraged to check 511 road condition resources before heading out.

The advisory expires at 9 a.m., but slick spots may persist into the late morning across shaded or less-traveled areas.
