New York, NY – New Yorkers should brace for extreme heat Friday as heat index values soar to 104 degrees by midday, triggering a widespread Heat Advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers all five boroughs—including Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island—along with Long Island’s Nassau and Suffolk counties. Parts of northeastern New Jersey and southern Connecticut are also under the alert, with similar heat indices expected.

The dangerous combination of high humidity and soaring temperatures could lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly for seniors, young children, and people without access to air conditioning. Homes without cooling can be significantly hotter than outdoor temperatures, increasing risk overnight.

New York City residents can dial 311 to locate nearby cooling centers and access “Beat the Heat” safety tips. Officials urge the public to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Outdoor workers should take frequent shaded breaks, per OSHA guidelines.

This is the fifth heat advisory issued this summer and could lead to temporary service delays or outages, especially on mass transit systems stressed by high demand.

The Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday. Additional warnings may be issued if the dangerous conditions persist into the weekend.
