Melbourne, FL – A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect this Sunday for the Southern Brevard Barrier Islands as Tropical Storm Nine edges closer to Florida’s east coast.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, winds are forecast to peak between 20–30 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, with the potential for tropical-storm-force winds reaching 39–57 mph. Officials advise residents to complete preparations now as hazardous winds could arrive later today.

The greatest impacts are expected to be scattered power outages, broken tree limbs, minor damage to porches and carports, and hazardous driving conditions, especially on bridges and elevated roads.

Rainfall is another concern, with 1–3 inches expected and localized higher amounts possible. The NWS warns that this could lead to flooding in low-lying areas, swollen streams, and temporary road closures.

At this time, storm surge flooding is not expected, though rough surf and dangerous rip currents remain a threat along the beaches. Tornado activity is also not anticipated.

Residents in Brevard County and surrounding coastal areas are urged to monitor forecasts and follow local emergency instructions as conditions develop.
