Nassau, Bahamas – Residents across the Bahamas are under a hurricane warning as powerful winds, destructive surf, and life-threatening storm surge are expected to intensify through the weekend. Forecasters warn that hurricane-force winds could top 95 mph in some islands by late Saturday, with seas building to more than 25 feet.
According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, tropical storm conditions will begin tonight for much of the region, with hurricane conditions likely Saturday into Saturday night. The most severe impacts are forecast for areas north of 20°N, where sustained winds may reach 75 to 95 knots and isolated gusts could push higher. Eastern and northern islands will also face dangerous coastal flooding and heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of power outages and impassable roads.
Marine conditions are expected to become extremely hazardous, with east-to-southeast swells producing surf capable of damaging coastal structures. Mariners are urged to remain in port and secure vessels. Residents should complete final storm preparations today, including charging devices, stocking food and water, and sheltering in a safe interior room.
The hurricane threat may persist into Sunday, with tropical storm conditions possible into Monday. Additional advisories and possible evacuation orders are expected in the coming hours.
