A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck off the Pacific coast of Guatemala this afternoon, centered about 101 kilometers south-southwest of Champerico, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake, recorded at 9.0 kilometers deep, hit at 2:40 p.m. local time and was strong enough to be felt in parts of southern Guatemala and neighboring El Salvador, though no immediate reports of major damage or injuries have emerged.

According to the USGS, the offshore location and moderate depth likely reduced the impact on inland communities, but light shaking was reported in coastal towns. Civil protection authorities in Guatemala advised residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks, which can still trigger landslides in mountainous areas or minor damage to older buildings.

Residents in Champerico, Retalhuleu, and nearby fishing communities said the shaking lasted several seconds, rattling windows and prompting some to move outdoors. Authorities are also monitoring the coast for any unusual sea activity, though no tsunami warning has been issued.

Officials urge people to review emergency plans, keep mobile devices charged, and avoid weakened structures until safety inspections are complete. Monitoring will continue through the evening, and updates will follow if aftershocks are recorded.
