Boulder, CO — A powerful wind event swept across Boulder and Colorado’s Front Range on Friday, December 19, producing extreme wind gusts exceeding 100 miles per hour in multiple locations and prompting safety concerns across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, the strongest gust reached 112 mph at the NCAR Mesa Laboratory near Boulder, one of the highest wind speeds recorded in the area during the event. Additional peak gusts included 102 mph near Niwot, 99 mph near Crisman, and numerous reports of 80 mph or higher throughout Boulder County and neighboring areas.

The National Weather Service said the wind event impacted much of the Front Range foothills and adjacent plains, with widespread reports from Boulder, Lyons, Marshall, Eldorado Springs, Rocky Flats, and Berthoud Pass, among other locations. Gusts in Boulder itself ranged from 70 to over 80 mph, creating hazardous conditions for travel and outdoor activity.

Meteorologists noted that relative humidity levels dropped to between 8 and 14 percent during the peak of the wind event, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread in areas with dry fuels. While no major fires were immediately reported, officials urged residents to remain cautious and avoid activities that could spark flames.

High winds caused blowing debris, difficult travel for high-profile vehicles, and the potential for downed trees and power lines. Drivers were advised to use caution, especially along foothill roads and exposed east-west routes.

Winds were expected to gradually weaken later Friday night into Saturday, though gusty conditions could persist in wind-prone areas.
