Boston, Mass. – Massachusetts residents will sweat through a brief burst of summer heat Sunday before a cooler air mass brings relief early in the week. Highs are expected to climb into the upper 80s and 90s in many inland communities Sunday afternoon, while coastal areas hold a few degrees lower.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, the shift arrives late Sunday night as a cold front sweeps across the state, knocking down daytime highs into the low to mid-70s by Monday. Breezier conditions and lower humidity will make the start of the workweek feel dramatically different from the weekend.

The sharp drop in temperatures will be felt across major metro areas. Boston could reach near 90 on Sunday but only manage 76 by Monday. Worcester and Springfield will see similar swings, with readings in the mid-80s to near 90 Sunday, followed by a fall into the 70s Monday. Southeastern Massachusetts, including New Bedford and Plymouth, will cool into the lower 70s.

Officials urge residents spending time outdoors Sunday to stay hydrated and limit strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day. Cooler, more seasonable weather is expected to linger through much of next week.
