Boston, Massachusetts – A mild January day is unfolding across eastern Massachusetts, offering a brief break from winter chill before scattered rain showers arrive late tonight, mainly impacting interior portions of southern New England.
Temperatures across the Boston metro are expected to climb well into the 40s this afternoon, with some neighborhoods reaching the mid to upper 40s under partly sunny skies. That warmth is several degrees above average for mid-January and will make for comfortable daytime travel and outdoor plans.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, dry conditions will hold through the evening hours before a weak system approaches late tonight. Scattered rain showers are expected to develop after midnight, primarily across interior southern New England. Along the immediate coast, including Boston, Logan Airport, Quincy, and the North Shore, rain coverage should remain spotty and light.
Any wintry precipitation will be limited to the highest elevations well inland. Forecasters say brief snow showers are possible across the Berkshires and the far northern Worcester Hills, where colder air may allow for a light dusting. Accumulations in those areas are expected to remain under one inch.
For the Boston area, impacts are expected to be minimal. Roads should remain mainly wet overnight, with temperatures staying above freezing. Visibility may briefly lower during passing showers, particularly for early-morning drivers on Wednesday.
Winds will remain relatively light overnight, helping prevent rapid cooling. That will limit the risk for icy conditions across eastern Massachusetts. Inland and elevated areas should still use caution where brief snow showers occur late tonight.
The mild pattern does not last indefinitely. Cooler air is expected to return later this week, bringing temperatures closer to seasonal norms after today’s warmth.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the mild daytime conditions but remain aware of changing weather late tonight. While no advisories are currently in effect for eastern Massachusetts, travelers heading inland overnight should monitor conditions, especially across higher terrain. Further updates will be issued if precipitation coverage or impacts increase overnight.
