BOSTON, Mass. – Thunderstorms will intensify across southern New England Friday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and possible small hail to the region just in time for the evening commute. The National Weather Service in Boston warns that travel along the I-95 corridor could be slowed by sudden downpours and gusty winds.
According to the NWS, the first round of storms is expected between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. across the Springfield and Hartford metro areas, followed by storms in Worcester through 8 p.m. The Boston to Providence corridor faces the longest window of impact, with thunderstorms likely from 2 p.m. until 11 p.m.
Forecasters say the strongest cells may produce brief torrential rain capable of ponding on roads, along with cloud-to-ground lightning. Commuters are advised to allow extra time for the drive home and avoid flooded intersections. Outdoor activities should be rescheduled, and residents are urged to secure loose items that could be blown around by gusty winds.
Storm chances taper off late tonight, but more unsettled weather could return through the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions intensify.
