BOSTON, Mass. — Scattered showers tonight may bring a quick inch of snow in the Berkshires.
According to the National Weather Service office in Boston, rain and higher-elevation snow showers are expected Wednesday night, with accumulations of up to 1 inch possible in the Berkshires. Forecasters said most other areas should see little impact from precipitation, with mainly dry and seasonable conditions returning Thursday and helping continued snowmelt.
A temperature outlook issued Wednesday afternoon shows many communities climbing into the upper 30s and low 40s Thursday. Highs were forecast near 41 in Boston and 41 in Providence, with about 37 in Worcester and around 40 in Springfield. Farther west, Pittsfield was shown near 39, while Fitchburg was near 38 and Greenfield near 39.
Across Connecticut and Rhode Island, highs were depicted near 41 in Hartford, 38 in New Haven, and 39 in New London, with about 42 in Willimantic. Along the South Coast and Cape, Thursday highs were shown around 40 in New Bedford and 40 in Hyannis, with about 39 in Provincetown. Nantucket was shown near 41.
The weather service said precipitation associated with low pressure to the south is expected to remain south of New England late Thursday night, limiting the risk of a more widespread rain or snow event.
Even minor snowfall in the Berkshires can create slick spots on untreated roads and higher passes, especially overnight. Drivers in western Massachusetts should watch for brief reductions in visibility during heavier snow showers and use caution on bridges and ramps.
For commuters, the return to mainly dry conditions Thursday should ease travel, but pockets of wet pavement early could linger where showers move through overnight.
