Boston, Massachusetts – A damp and unsettled weather pattern is expected across eastern Massachusetts and southern New England this weekend, with steady rain developing Saturday before tapering off Sunday evening.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Boston, scattered rain showers may occur tonight, followed by steadier rainfall beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing into the evening. Forecast guidance shows rain chances increasing to 80–90 percent Saturday evening across much of the region, with widespread cloud cover in place.
Temperatures will remain relatively mild for January, with afternoon readings generally in the low to mid-40s on Saturday and Sunday. While Saturday is expected to be the wettest day of the weekend, forecasters say conditions on Sunday will not be completely dry. Lingering showers may persist into the afternoon before a cold front moves through later in the day.
The National Weather Service noted that winds will increase at times, with gusts frequently reaching 20 to 30 mph, particularly near the coast and across exposed areas. Despite the gusty conditions, no widespread wind damage is currently expected.
Rainfall totals are not expected to be excessive, but periods of steady rain may lead to ponding on roadways and reduced visibility, especially during Saturday evening travel. Drivers are urged to use caution during wet conditions and allow extra stopping distance.
Behind the cold front Sunday evening, drier air will gradually move into the region, bringing an end to the rain and mild temperatures. Cooler conditions are expected to follow heading into early next week.
For commuters, students, and weekend workers, the combination of rain, cloud cover, and gusty winds may impact outdoor plans and travel at times, particularly Saturday afternoon and evening.
