Boston, Massachusetts — A sharp temperature drop is expected to bring dangerous cold to the Boston area this weekend following a brief late-week warmup.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, temperatures will briefly rise into the upper 30s and low 40s on Thursday before plunging Friday night into Saturday. High temperatures Saturday are forecast to remain in the single digits to teens, with wind chill values making it feel between minus 5 and minus 20 degrees across southern New England.
Forecasters say the rapid change is the result of an Arctic air mass moving into the region. Gusty winds will significantly increase the risk of frostbite for anyone exposed outdoors, particularly during the early morning hours Saturday.
While snowfall is not the primary concern, the extreme cold could impact travel conditions. Any residual moisture on roadways may refreeze overnight, creating slick spots on untreated surfaces. Bridges and overpasses are especially vulnerable as temperatures fall rapidly.
Major routes including Interstate 93, Interstate 90 (the Massachusetts Turnpike), and Route 1 could see hazardous early-morning driving conditions Saturday due to refreezing and reduced vehicle performance in extreme cold.
The National Weather Service urges residents to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Drivers are advised to check vehicle batteries, carry emergency cold-weather supplies, and allow extra time for travel during the coldest periods.
Temperatures are expected to gradually moderate Sunday and early next week, but officials warn that cold conditions will remain below normal for several days.
For commuters, students, and early-shift workers, the most hazardous window is expected early Saturday morning, when the coldest wind chills will coincide with overnight refreezing across the Boston area.
