Boston, MA — The calm weather across Boston today will be short-lived, as a cold front and strengthening winds are expected to bring a noticeable shift just ahead of Christmas week.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, Saturday, December 20, will feature sunshine, diminishing winds, and seasonable temperatures, making it a favorable day for outdoor plans and travel. Winds that were gusty earlier will gradually ease through the morning, with highs near normal for late December.

Conditions will begin to change late Saturday night into Sunday morning, as southwest winds increase, especially along the South Coast and coastal Massachusetts. Gusts will strengthen ahead of an approaching cold front, with wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph possible across the Boston area and higher gusts in exposed coastal locations.

The cold front is expected to move through Sunday afternoon, followed by a shift to gusty west to northwest winds Sunday evening and overnight. While Sunday daytime temperatures will remain relatively mild, forecasters warn of a sharp cooldown Sunday night.

By Monday morning, low temperatures across eastern Massachusetts, including Boston, are expected to drop into the upper teens to low 20s, with wind chills falling into the single digits in many areas. These temperatures will feel especially cold for early commuters and holiday travelers.

Despite the wind and temperature changes, the National Weather Service says no significant precipitation is expected, and skies should remain mostly dry through the weekend. Any impacts are expected to be related primarily to wind and cold rather than snow or ice.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, dress in layers, and prepare for colder conditions heading into the final days before Christmas. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should also be mindful of gusty winds, particularly on bridges and coastal roadways.
