BOSTON, Mass. – Light rain and gusty winds will return to eastern Massachusetts Monday afternoon and evening as a passing cold front crosses southern New England. The National Weather Service in Boston said the system will bring a quick round of showers and breezy west-northwest winds that could last into early Tuesday morning.
According to the Weather Service, rain will begin to move in from the southwest after 3 p.m. Monday, peaking during the evening commute before tapering off around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Gusts of 25 to 30 mph are likely overnight as colder, drier air moves in behind the front. No flash flooding is expected, but forecasters caution that nuisance street flooding could occur in low-lying or poor drainage areas, especially around Boston, Worcester, and Providence.
Temperatures will stay seasonably cool, with highs Monday in the upper 40s to low 50s and lows dipping into the upper 30s by Tuesday morning. Conditions will gradually clear through the day Tuesday as high pressure builds back in from the west, bringing a stretch of calmer, cooler fall weather midweek.
Residents are advised to allow extra time for the Monday evening drive and secure outdoor decorations ahead of the wind shift. Small branches could break overnight, but widespread damage is not expected.
