BOSTON, Mass. – The coldest air so far this fall is set to sweep across southern New England tonight, dropping temperatures below freezing in many inland areas while coastal communities remain slightly milder. Residents in central and western Massachusetts should prepare for the season’s first widespread frost and freeze.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, Freeze Warnings are in effect for interior counties including Worcester, Franklin, and Hampden, while Frost Advisories extend across portions of Middlesex, Bristol, and Providence Counties. Temperatures will dip into the upper 20s and low 30s by early Friday, with the coldest readings just before sunrise. Boston is expected to bottom out near 36°F, while Greenfield and Springfield may reach 27–28°F.
The agency warns that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, harm sensitive vegetation, and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Homeowners are urged to bring potted plants indoors, use lightweight fabric coverings on garden beds, and ensure outdoor faucets are drained or insulated. Those with livestock or outdoor pets should provide extra bedding and shelter from the wind.
High pressure behind this chill will keep skies clear into Friday, allowing for rapid overnight cooling. Temperatures will rebound into the 50s by afternoon before another chilly night Friday into Saturday. The coast — including Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Block Island — will stay above freezing, thanks to ocean moderation, but may still experience patchy frost in sheltered areas.
Residents traveling early Friday morning should watch for reduced visibility from frost on windshields and slick patches on bridges and overpasses.
