BOSTON — The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning and Cold Weather Advisory for much of southern New England as dangerous wind chills are expected from Saturday evening through early Sunday afternoon.
Forecasters warn that interior portions of Massachusetts and northern Connecticut could experience wind chill values as low as −30°F, while eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island may see wind chills drop to −20°F. These conditions pose a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia, with exposed skin potentially freezing in as little as 10 to 30 minutes.
The coldest conditions are expected overnight, impacting communities along major transportation corridors including Interstate 90 (Mass Pike), I-91, I-95, I-84, and I-290. Motorists traveling late Saturday or early Sunday should prepare for rapidly worsening conditions, vehicle issues related to extreme cold, and limited visibility in blowing snow in some areas.
Officials urge residents to limit outdoor exposure, especially during the overnight hours. If travel is unavoidable, dress in multiple layers, cover exposed skin, and carry emergency supplies. Pets should be brought indoors, and vulnerable populations should be checked on frequently.
Homeowners are advised to protect pipes and plumbing from freezing by insulating exposed pipes and allowing faucets to drip if necessary. Those relying on alternative heating sources should use them safely and ensure proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide exposure.
Emergency managers stress that preparation is critical. Keep phones charged, have flashlights ready, and ensure heating systems are functioning properly before temperatures plunge.
Conditions are expected to slowly improve Sunday afternoon, but lingering cold will remain. Stay updated through weather.gov, NOAA Weather Radio, and local alerts as this life-threatening cold moves across New England.
