Boston, Massachusetts – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect as light snow spreads across northern and central Massachusetts late Tuesday, with slick travel conditions expected into early Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service office in Boston reported that snow will develop late Tuesday afternoon, becoming steady at times across northern Massachusetts and parts of central Massachusetts. Most areas under the advisory are expected to receive 2 to 4 inches of snow, with the higher end of totals favored north of the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Snowfall rates are expected to remain generally light to moderate, but forecasters caution that even modest accumulations could impact travel. As the system exits overnight, precipitation may transition to freezing drizzle, resulting in a light glaze of ice before ending around or shortly after daybreak Wednesday.

The advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 a.m. Wednesday. Road conditions may deteriorate during the evening and overnight hours, especially on untreated surfaces. Travel impacts are most likely along major corridors including Interstate 90 (Mass Pike), Interstate 93, Interstate 95, Route 2, and Interstate 91, particularly during the late-night and early-morning hours.

The National Weather Service urged motorists to use caution, slow down, and allow extra time for travel. Bridges, overpasses, and secondary roads may become slick as temperatures hover near freezing.

While snowfall amounts are not expected to be extreme, the combination of snow followed by freezing drizzle increases the potential for hazardous travel conditions across the region. Commuters heading out early Wednesday should be prepared for patchy ice.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and advisories from the National Weather Service as conditions evolve overnight.
