Boston, Massachusetts – Drivers across eastern Massachusetts have a narrow window to prepare before snow overspreads I-95 and I-93 between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday, creating slick roads during peak commute hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a quick-moving system will bring 1 to 3 inches of snow across much of southern New England Wednesday morning. Snow develops from west to east between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., then tapers off between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The highest totals are expected across central and western Massachusetts and northern Connecticut, while the South Coast may see a transition to rain late morning.

Statewide, cities including Springfield, Worcester and Lowell could pick up 2 to 3 inches before precipitation lightens. Along the I-90 Massachusetts Turnpike corridor and I-91 in the Connecticut River Valley, snowfall rates may briefly reduce visibility and coat untreated pavement.

In the Boston metro, I-93, Route 3 and I-95 will likely turn slushy by mid-morning. Elevated ramps and bridges freeze first, especially as temperatures hover near the freezing mark. Farther south toward Plymouth, New Bedford and Hyannis, snow may mix with rain before ending early afternoon, limiting totals but increasing slush.

Commuters should allow extra travel time, increase following distance and check Mass511 for live roadway conditions. Crews will treat major highways, but snowfall during the morning drive could outpace clearing efforts.

Snow ends west to east by early afternoon Wednesday. While no widespread power issues are expected, slick spots may linger into the evening as temperatures cool.
